WSB Miller: Biaggi celebrates ‘lucky’ race wins

1 of 1

Max Biaggi stormed to his second double win of the 2010 championship to take the lead of the standings for the first time in his Superbike career.

The factory Aprilia rider was the only man capable of keeping flying Spaniard Carlos Checa in touch in both races and was ultimately gifted the win after Checa was ruled out of both races with technical problems.

In what was a historic day for Aprilia, Biaggi was backed up by his team-mate Leon Camier in race two to record the Italian manufacturers’ first ever 1 – 2 finish in WSB.

Biaggi said: “This is a fantastic day for me. It was my dream to make a double win here in Salt Lake City and that’s what I did. I’m very lucky and I think Checa deserves the race wins, he rode very hard and honestly speaking he did deserve it, but racing is racing, sometimes these things happen. It was a hard race with him, we had a good rhythm and a very good pace.”

Biaggi has now scored 257 points and sits 15 points clear of Alstare Suzuki rider Leon Haslam at the top of the table. Biaggi’s double win came using the new gear driven cam motor – the first time he has used it on race day.

“The 50 points is very good for me and my team. We’ve only been racing this bike for one and a half season, but we have developed it very well and my engineers have done a great job. I am very happy for Aprilia, the bike is strong and we can compete with the Japanese manufacturers. The bike is very fast and on this track its flying.”
