Insurance bargains: 125cc bikes

125cc bikes currently make up a large portion of bikes sold in the UK thanks to their low price and economical engines.

Part of their broad appeal is that 125cc motorcycle insurance costs are typically low; often cheaper than larger capacity motorbike insurance.

When it comes to picking your next bike, don't forget to include motorcycle insurance in the things to look at before you spend your cash.

We've picked out five 125cc bikes which would make a good choice when it comes to keeping an eye on your insurance costs compard to the competition.

Honda CG125, insurance group 3

With over ten million sold worldwide the CG125 is the Spam of biking; a bit downmarket, but ultimately does exactly as it says on the tin.

The CG125 will happily plod on forever and a day with very little maintenance - the very definition of rugged reliability and cheap to insure.

Derbi GPR125, insurance group 4

One of the best sports 125s, the Derbi also has the bonus of being cheaper to insure than the Yamaha YZF-R125 and more pracitcal Honda CBR125.

The GPR is one of the quickest 125s and loves to be revved. The little Derbi holds a line and steers much better than its rivals, but suffers on poor roads where things can get a bit uncomfortable.

Sachs Madass 125, insurance group 3

Insurance group three and surprisingly good fun, the Madass is half-BMX, half-moped and as such is easy to chuck about.

The engine is a little agricultural and slow, but there are hundreds of of aftermarket parts to make your Madass go as good as it looks. Just be sure to declare all your mods on your insurance!

Derbi Terra Adventure, insurance group 4

A fantastic looking mini adventure bike that goes just as well as it looks, both on road and off. The Terra may only be a 125, but it's capable of proper adventures.

The Terra 125 isn't the cheapest 125 out there, but you get a lot of bike for your money that can quite feasibly take you anywhere you want to go.

Yamaha YBR125 Custom, insurance group 2

The idea behind the Yamaha YBR125 Custom is dead simple: take the straightforward YBR125 commuter, customize it a bit with high bars, more chrome and a lower seat, bump up the price a tad.

In reality, it makes a lot of sense as the low seat makes it even more easy to ride and it’s more practical thanks to the addition of a rack. Two insurance groups lower than the standard YBR125.
