New helmet gets suspension system

American helmet brand 6D have unveiled a new helmet design, that boasts a unique suspension system between the shell and lining which – if it proves to be as clever as it looks – could revolutionise helmet design.

Dubbed Omni-Directional Suspension (ODS), the technology is designed to reduce energy transfer to the brain in the event of a crash by compressing and shearing in all directions. Both ECE 22.05 and ACU approved, the shock-absorbers protect the head from both direct and rotational impacts.

Elastomeric Isolation Dampers are the central component and work by isolating impact energy away from the brain. The hourglass shape and elastic tendencies provide a progressive spring rate that helps cushion the blow, as the video below explains.

Available now for £699, the track-focussed ATS-1 is worn in BSB by double British Superstock 1000 Champion Danny Buchan and current Superstock 1000 front-runner Billy McConnell – adding a layer of combat testing to the product development.
