Each year, we award the motorcycle racer you think has most impressed with their results from across the year with the MCN Man of the Year trophy. With voting for the 2016 Man of the Year now open, we thought we’d take a more detailed look at some of the contenders….

Shane Byrne

When Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne and the Paul Bird Motosport team announced they’d make a switch to Ducati for the 2016 MCE British Superbike season, a number of their rivals let out a huge sigh of relief.

Byrne might be the most successful rider in the series’ 21-year history, but Ducati hadn’t won a championship since he rode for the Airwaves GSE team in 2008, or a race since Michael Rutter took victory at Silverstone in 2011.

However, after just three rounds, Byrne ended Ducati’s six year drought and, while it was a tough season as he fought with the beastly Panigale, he went on to beat Leon Haslam to the title in a close fought end to the year.

Byrne’s fifth title extends his crown as the most successful rider in BSB history.
