Helmet review: HJC IS-MULTI

HJC IS-MULTI helmet, £169.99
Miles covered/time: 3000/three months
What’s good? HJC claims this is “seven helmets in one”. It’s actually more like four in one (we don’t think adding the sun shield counts) but that’s still seriously impressive.
What this means is that if you buy an IS-MULTI you can ride a sports bike, a cruiser, a supermoto and a trailie without buying four separate lids.
The chin bar, shield and visor pop on and off as easily and smoothly as playing with Lego, while still feeling reasonably secure. It offers a particularly wide and clear view and the internal sun visor is exceptionally good.
What’s not? This lid’s a jack-of-all-trades and – you guessed it – master of none. Pretty good as a road, supermoto, open-face and trials helmet, it’s not going to be your first choice for any of these purposes.
The chin bar is very adaptable but feels slightly flimsy and it’s not as durable as a specialised off-road helmet.
But, having said all that, it could be the best spare helmet money can buy as it lets you dip into four different styles at bare minimal expense.
