Boots Review: TCX S-Race boots

TCX S-Race boots, £129.99 (special deal on www.mcnshop.com)
Time tested: 15,000 miles/three years
What’s good? There’s a balance to be struck between heavy-duty protection and everyday practicality and, for me, these TCX boots strike it perfectly. They offer the protection I want, but without the faff and hassle associated with some race boots. One zip, one Velcro flap and the boot is either on or off. I can’t argue with the Race name, as I have raced in these, but I think of them more as sporty every day road boots. If it’s hacking with rain, I wear waterproof boots. Otherwise, I take these. They’re a bit smelly after three years of hard use, but they’re otherwise going strong.
What’s not? They creak a lot, until you get busy with the silicone oil. After that, they’re subtle in every way (as long as you don’t buy white). These have been discontinued (the S-R1 is the nearest replacement), but clearance stocks are at an excellent price on the MCN Shop.
