Motorcycle insurance bargains: Triumph Speed Triple 1050

1 of 3

Motorcycle insurance costs are an important consideration for any bike buyer. That's why MCN is highlighting some of the best cheap-to-insure motorcycles out there. This time it's the Triumph Speed Triple 1050

Insurance group: 14
Used price: £4,100 - £7,799
New price: £7,799
Engine: 12v transverse triple, 6 gears
Power: 128bhp
Top speed: 150mph
Weight: 189kg

A 1050cc naked muscle bike might not be the first machine you think of when looking for cheap insurance, but compared to its rivals it's the cheap-to-insure option. The Yamaha FZ1, Honda CB1000R, Aprilia Tuono and Kawasaki Z1000 are all one insurance group higher.

But don't think that's because the Speed Triple is the soft option - it's a full-on factory streetfighter capable of 150mph (if your neck muscles are up to it). It's 1050cc triple motor makes bags of torque and pulls hard and evenly right all the way from 3000 to 8000 rpm.

Suspension is more focused than you might expect for a big naked, so it's worth taking a test ride to make sure you get on with it. It's also a big chunky bike and needs a firm hand in bends, but that can be part of the fun. Having said that it's no slouch - you could bring the Speed Triple to a track day without worry.

Overall, the quirky British Speed Triple is a timelessly handsome bike and a serious weekend hooligan tool. As one of MCN's road testers once wrote: "The Speed Triple always was, and remains, a bit of a Rottweiler."
