Basic Skills: California Superbike School review

Don’t be scared – it’s not in California and it’s not just for superbike riders.

MCN’s Laura Kennerley went on a ladies-only training day to learn the finer points of cornering, and realised everyone can benefit, especially if you’ve just passed your test.

What is it?
California Superbike School Level 1 – Cornering

Where can I do it?
Silverstone, Northamptonshire, Brands Hatch, Kent or Mondello Park, Ireland.

What do I need?
You can ride your own bike or hire one of the school’s fleet of Yamaha R6s at an additional cost of £229 per day (including tyres and fuel) plus a £750 returnable damage deposit.

You also need full race leathers, helmet, gloves and appropriate boots. Details are issued with the joining instructions. Items will be checked and if you are using your own bike it will be scrutineered by staff.

What does it involve?
This is a fairly intensive day of riding, starting with signing on between 7am and 8am and a final briefing at 5pm - so be prepared and stay over the night before if you live any distance away!

All riding is done on track, and you will be in a group of riders on the same level of the course as you (there are four levels).

On Level One your time at the school will basically alternate between classroom sessions explaining the theory of cornering and then 25 minutes track time putting it in to action.

The basic premise is to knock you back to basics and then re-build your cornering skills from there.

You start off slowly learning how to approach a corner at the right speed, using throttle control, then work through lessons about braking points, counter steering and finally focus points in corners.

You will feel your riding improve as the day goes on, and if you don't the instructor assigned to you on the track will either show you what to do on track or pull you to one side and help you achieve all of these goals by talking you through it.

Besides riding on track you will also complete a slow speed manoevering lesson off the track.

MCN's verdict:
As a new rider don't be intimidated by the fact this is on a track - the instructors keep any potential boy racers in check!

It is a great days riding, very intense but is undenibly a great benefit to everyone who ever rides a bike around a corner!
