Product Review: Alpinestars Tech St Gore-Tex jacket £599 and trousers £449

Tester: Michael Guy

Time tested: Three years/30,000 miles

What’s good?
I’ve covered big miles in all manner of weather conditions and this Alpinestars suit continues to impress. There are a number of stand-out features I really like. The first is the fit because, unlike some baggy and ill-fitting suits, this jacket and trouser combination is incredibly well tailored. There is no excess material on the outer shell which means the suit does not flap around in the wind. The Gore-Tex outer also does exactly what it’s supposed to and keeps me dry – no matter the weather. And I also think it looks good. It’s the only suit I’ve had where people still comment on how it looks, largely due to leather detailing on the shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, bum and inside lower leg. I still get asked if it’s a new suit, which is not bad considering it’s done over 30,000 miles.

What’s not?
Despite having worn this suit a lot I need to get picky if I’m to find fault. The collar is still stiff, despite its age and makes my neck sore at the end of a long day. The jacket has ventilation zips, but it’s a bit of a token gesture as they are not big enough to give any true air flow benefits. Also, the model has been discontinued now so buying it involves hunting around for remaining stock. The prices above are for kit we’ve seen for sale online in the past couple of weeks.
