Kit review - HJC HQ-1 Spies

HJC HQ-1 Spies £284.99

Miles covered/time: Two years/countless races

What’s good? Crash protection with this HQ-1 has been proved – I lent it to my younger brother to use for racing, rather than the cheap lid he had. An embarrassing new-tyre highside fired numbnuts straight up, then down on the back of the helmet.

It was a slow crash admittedly, but he landed hard enough to break his scaphoid and dislocate his hand. His head was protected perfectly. Before the crash he found the fit perfect for him – it never fitted me quite as snugly, but that’s a personal thing. The CoolMax liner wicked sweat effectively

What’s not? You can’t buy it any more – not officially, anyway. There’s still some on the MCN online Shop – starting at £169.99, up to £284.99 for this Ben Spies replica (from his AMA Superbike days). My brother will have plenty of time to save up for a new one during his convalescence...
