Helmet review: Arai RX-7 GP Spencer replica
Arai RX-7 GP Spencer replica, £579.99
Miles covered/time: Three months/2000 miles
What’s good? This was a treasured helmet. Freddie designed the original himself, and Arai’s latest homage adds only silver pinstriping and nicer paint finish – it’s a classic race rep. Sadly it’s already been written off – in a moderately violent lowside, it was smacked on initial impact and then bounced repeatedly before finally landing in a hedge. No damaging impacts reached my head – there’s little more you can ask. Apart from a time machine to prevent the accident in the first place.
What’s not? The usual top-of-the-range helmet caveat: price. £580 is a lot of money however you look at it. It’s noisy for road use too, but it’s designed for track use with lots of vents for hot days (which work). There are other helmets in the range for covering loads of miles in – consider whether a track-focused helmet is really what you need.
