Shark Speed R Carbon skin helmet, £330
Time tested: One year/ 8500 miles
What’s good? This helmet quickly became my default choice when I was commuting to work on the BMW R nineT long-term test bike I had last year thanks to the lightweight construction, good fit and ventilation, drop-down sunvisor and overall comfort. The standard anti-mist Pinlock insert is a welcome boon too. The carbon skin finish is excellent. I still consider the lower weight when comparted to the standard fibreglass-shelled Speed R to be worth the extra £50.
What’s not? The visor closing tab still infuriates me to the point of explosion. It is a truly hateful and terrible design that cannot be opened in anything other than summer gloves and saw this helmet relegated to a shelf in favour of my trusty Schuberth S2 for winter because of this flaw. The problem is with the way the plastic of the visor tab is bent in towards the shell of the helmet making it hard to open.
