Ducati is often seen with prestige, as a kind of royalty within the motorcycling world. Expensive, exotic and utterly captivating, the Bologna factory makes machines that will move your soul and tug at your heartstrings. In last weeks Motorcycle News (August 19th) we tested the top pickings of Ducati’s illustrious superbike line-up of the past decade against each other to see how the Italian superstars have developed since the 1098 was introduced in 2006.
After the dark age of the 999 era, Ducati were determined to make the 1098 a showstopper. They did this with the introduction the all-new Testastretta 1099cc V-twin powerhouse replacing the out-dated Desmoquattro motor that had played its part as the firm’s flagship motor since the introduction of the 851 in 1988.
Ducati were determined to take on their Japanese rivals and play them at their own game, ditching the often-used ‘long and lazy’ name that the pre-1098 machines had a reputation for. The 999’s looks had alienated and betrayed the Italian firms glittering image with what many believe to be the ugly ducking in Ducati’s recent history, with an absolutely stunning facelift that silhouetted the 916, the 1098 was thing of beauty.
The 1098 works beautifully and feels instantly familiar, with these two traits being central to it being such a standout model and a major advance from the 999. The riding position is open and spacious, allowing you to move about on the bike and position yourself for bends with ease. Stopping and tipping it into corners becomes easy, and makes chasing the apex a delight.
The throttle is super-smooth, making it a real pleasure to drive out of turns. It would have been too easy for Ducati to put the claimed 160bhp through an on/off switch with the throttle, but they hit the Holy Grail with the 1098, balancing power with control.
With lazy-handling a thing of the past, Ducati combined it’s stonking V-twin engine with an agile chassis that allowed you to go fast while retaining a feeling of control, the 1098 was and still is sublime.
