Why an old Africa Twin may not be worth as much as you might think...

The Africa Twin was a cracking machine, is now a cult bike, and last year’s release of the new model has reminded people of this fact. The old V-twin really, really held its value. It went out of production in 2003, but even a couple of years ago, a decent one would cost you £3000. But unfortunately, people are getting optimistic.

Just the other day I was pondering buying one. The seller thought his 2001 model low-miler was worth £4400. Dream on. Admittedly it had a lot of good accessories, but don’t be suckered into thinking a 15-year- old African Queen is worth that.

If anything, the new model has killed appreciation of the old – there really was little to compete with it, except for an old Yamaha 750 Ténéré, and while the Twin was
a better bike, nobody should pay anything more than £3750 for the very best one. Or you could hunt out an old Yamaha 600cc Ténéré single for less than half that – it’s way cooler and practically elevates you to hero status in parts of Europe.

I’ve also been looking at learner bikes. That one-time teen dream sports 125, Honda’s CBR, seems to have fallen out of bed price-wise. Yamaha’s YZF has hammered it. You can buy one for the price of a CBF125, maybe even less.

Oh, and the Kawasaki KH100EX I bought last December for £650 will, by the time you read this, have been sold at Kempton Park autojumble. I hope. I’ve had quite a bit of fun on it, and I’m aiming for £850.
